The directory records the commonly cited foundation or traditional date as 594 (traditional date); where a date is traditional rather than documented by a surviving foundation record, that wording is kept deliberately.
One of Kerala’s best-known St George pilgrimage centres. The parish tradition places its origin in the sixth century; the present basilica complex is a later development.
